Albums I bought in 2009 #2

  • Unplugged in New York – Nirvana
Continuing the David Bowie obsession, this album has a Bowie cover.  And a few other songs that remind me of my first long-term boyfriend and a Year 12 spent in a stoned haze in a backyard in the Western suburbs of Melbourne.
  • Superunknown – Soundgarden
Curse iTunes and its ability to remind me of the albums I never bought when they were released. One day I’ll have the music collection I yearned for as a 15-year-old. And hopefully by that point, grunge will be back in fashion.
  • Top of the Pop – Project Pop
Project Pop are an Indonesian musical comedy group, and I just wish I could show a couple of their tracks to someone who’s gonna get how funny they are. Search Youtube  for “Metal vs Dugem” or “Dangdut is the Music of my Country” – maybe you’ll understand.
  • Angels & The Outsiders – Superman Is Dead
Everytime I’m back in Indonesia, I grab two or three random CDs just to get an idea of what’s happening music-wise there. This one had cool artwork on the cover, and ends up being Indonesian punk/ska music. I like muchly.
  • Nevermind – Nirvana
I’ve never owned a copy of this album. But it’s such a seminal work, and one that has seeped so deeply into the subconscious of anyone in their 30s that I knew all the songs intimately from the opening chords.
  • Panca Indera – Cokelat
I’d already torrented this album. It’s only fair and right that I purchased a copy as soon as I saw one for sale.
  • Sounds of Java: Traditional Gamelan
They tried to sell me “Spa relaxation music”, where the gamelan sounds have been Westernised to better suit our ears. To hell with that. I want the nasal singing, and cacophonic, syncopatic, weirdly dischordant sounds of proper gamelan.

Places where I wish I lived #2

Jl. Tentara Pelajar (Student Army Street). They want to bring down the hierarchical consumer-centric hegemony, and crush the patriarchal paradigm, but the Collective can’t come to an agreement on who’s first against the wall.
