Unplugged in New York – Nirvana
Continuing the David Bowie obsession, this album has a Bowie cover. And a few other songs that remind me of my first long-term boyfriend and a Year 12 spent in a stoned haze in a backyard in the Western suburbs of Melbourne.
Superunknown – Soundgarden
Curse iTunes and its ability to remind me of the albums I never bought when they were released. One day I’ll have the music collection I yearned for as a 15-year-old. And hopefully by that point, grunge will be back in fashion.
Top of the Pop – Project Pop
Project Pop are an Indonesian musical comedy group, and I just wish I could show a couple of their tracks to someone who’s gonna get how funny they are. Search Youtube for “Metal vs Dugem” or “Dangdut is the Music of my Country” – maybe you’ll understand.
Angels & The Outsiders – Superman Is Dead
Everytime I’m back in Indonesia, I grab two or three random CDs just to get an idea of what’s happening music-wise there. This one had cool artwork on the cover, and ends up being Indonesian punk/ska music. I like muchly.
Nevermind – Nirvana
I’ve never owned a copy of this album. But it’s such a seminal work, and one that has seeped so deeply into the subconscious of anyone in their 30s that I knew all the songs intimately from the opening chords.
Panca Indera – Cokelat
I’d already torrented this album. It’s only fair and right that I purchased a copy as soon as I saw one for sale.
Sounds of Java: Traditional Gamelan They tried to sell me “Spa relaxation music”, where the gamelan sounds have been Westernised to better suit our ears. To hell with that. I want the nasal singing, and cacophonic, syncopatic, weirdly dischordant sounds of proper gamelan.
Hunky Dory – David Bowie
The song Life on Mars? has possessed me. Sent from the devil, it’s already convinced me to get copies of 3 seasons of the eponymous TV show (2xUK, 1xUS) and now to pay $18 to Apple for the album.
Diamond Dogs – David Bowie
JB didn’t have Hunky Dory, but it did have Diamond Dogs for under $10. Which was the price I wanted to pay for Hunky Dory.
Never for Ever – Kate Bush
I always promise myself that I’ll buy more Kate Bush, and I never get around to it.
Lethal Weapons – Various Artists
It has three rare Boys Next Door tracks. I thought I already had These Boots Are Made for Walking, but it turns out I’ve got some OTHER version they did. Score!
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space – Spiritualized
One of the nicest things about watching an act you’ve never seen before is coming away afterwards feeling compelled to purchase their back catalogue.
Various Positions – Leonard Cohen
Needs no explanation.
